Dedicated circuit installation

Do you trip a breaker every time you plug in your hair dryer or use your toaster? This common annoyance could be an indicator that your appliance isn’t receiving enough power to operate safely without overloading your system.

The National Electric Code requires major appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers to have their own dedicated circuit. An appliance with a dedicated circuit has its own circuit breaker in your electrical box. No other appliance should utilize energy from this circuit. It is “dedicated” to this single appliance. They are installed to ensure major appliances have the energy they need to function properly and not overload the system.

When You Need a Dedicated Circuit

  • Refrigerators, freezers and microwaves
  • Electric ranges, ovens and cooktops
  • Washers and dryers
  • Dishwashers and garbage disposals
  • Air conditioning and heating equipment
  • EV chargers, hot tubs and workshop tools

How We Add a Circuit

We check how much capacity is left in your electrical panel, run a new circuit with the right wire size and breaker, and install the outlet or connection for the appliance. If the panel is full, we explain the options, including a panel upgrade. A home EV charger also needs its own 240-volt circuit, and we check the panel for it the same way.

Questions and Answers

Why does my breaker trip when I use two appliances at once?

The appliances are probably sharing one circuit that cannot carry both loads. A dedicated circuit for the larger appliance usually solves the problem.

Can you add a circuit if my panel is full?

Often yes, depending on the panel. If there is no room or capacity, we explain the options, such as a panel upgrade.
