Electrical work in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a separate city with its own Building & Safety division, so electrical permits are issued by the City of Santa Monica, not LADBS. Electricity is delivered by Southern California Edison (SCE), with power supplied through Clean Power Alliance.

Santa Monica’s building codes push new homes toward all-electric design, and many existing homes are also switching from gas to heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and induction cooking. Each of those adds load, and many older bungalows and apartment buildings still have small panels. Before an electrification project or an EV charger, we check the panel and service and tell you what is needed: a new circuit, load management, or a panel upgrade.

Questions and Answers

Do I need a panel upgrade to switch from gas to electric?

Often, but not always. A heat pump, induction range and EV charger together add a lot of load. We calculate what your home will need and whether the current panel can handle it.

Who issues electrical permits in Santa Monica?

The City of Santa Monica Building & Safety. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

Do you work on apartments and multi-unit buildings?

Yes. We handle panel upgrades, circuits and EV charging for multi-unit buildings as well as single-family homes.
