New residential breaker panel with neatly routed wiring

Sky Power Co. is a licensed electrical contractor (CSLB #1037507) in Sherman Oaks. Since 2018 our team of five electricians has upgraded main panels, meters and services for homes and businesses across Los Angeles.

When a panel upgrade makes sense

  • Breakers trip often, or lights dim when a big appliance turns on
  • There is no room left in the panel for new circuits
  • You are adding an EV charger, central air conditioning, an induction range, a hot tub or a heat pump
  • You are remodeling, adding a room or building an ADU
  • The home still has a fuse box, or a panel brand known for problems, such as Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) or Zinsco
  • Signs of damage: a warm panel cover, burn marks, buzzing, rust or water inside the panel

Many homes in the Valley and on the west side were built with 60 or 100 amp service. That was enough decades ago, but not for today’s loads. A common upgrade is to a 200 amp main panel; larger homes sometimes need more. We size the panel to the house and what you plan to add, not the other way around.

How it works

  1. Visit and load check. An electrician looks at your panel, meter and wiring, adds up what the house uses now and what you plan to add, and explains the options and the price before any work starts.
  2. Permit. We pull the electrical permit with the city: LADBS in the City of Los Angeles (Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Encino, Woodland Hills, Pacific Palisades), or the city’s own Building and Safety department in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.
  3. Utility coordination. If the service size or the meter changes, we coordinate with the utility: LADWP in the City of Los Angeles, Southern California Edison (SCE) in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.
  4. Installation. We replace the panel, label every circuit and make sure grounding and bonding meet current code. We tell you in advance when the power will be off and for how long.
  5. Inspection and power back on. We schedule the city inspection. Once it passes, the utility re-energizes the new service.

FAQ

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

If breakers trip often, the panel is full, you still have fuses, or you are adding an EV charger, air conditioning or a remodel, it is worth checking. We look at the panel and add up the load, then tell you whether an upgrade is needed or not.

Do I need a permit to replace my electrical panel?

Yes. A panel or service upgrade needs an electrical permit and a city inspection. We pull the permit, do the work to code and schedule the inspection.

Do you work with LADWP and SCE?

Yes. When the service size or meter changes we coordinate with LADWP in the City of Los Angeles or with Southern California Edison in cities like Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.

Will my power be off?

Yes, for part of the job while the old panel is swapped. We tell you in advance when the power will be off and for how long.

How much does a panel upgrade cost?

It depends on the panel size, the service and what needs to change at the meter. We give you the price after the visit, before any work starts. The visit is $135 during business hours and is waived if we do the work.
