Sky Power Co. is a licensed electrical contractor (CSLB #1037507) in Sherman Oaks. Since 2018 our team of five electricians has installed standby generators for homes and businesses across Los Angeles, with the transfer switch, permits and inspection included.

Why a standby generator

Power in Los Angeles goes out for storms, wind and equipment failures. In high-wind fire weather, Southern California Edison can also turn off power on purpose in high-risk areas to prevent fires, which affects parts of Malibu, Calabasas, Pacific Palisades and the hills. A standby generator starts on its own within seconds of an outage and keeps the home running until the power comes back.

What we install

  • Standby generators that run on natural gas or propane, for the whole home or for selected circuits
  • An automatic transfer switch that moves the house to generator power and back without anyone touching anything
  • Panel work when it is needed, including panel upgrades and a separate panel for essential circuits
  • We work with major generator brands, including Kohler, Generac, Champion and Briggs & Stratton

Sizing: whole home or essentials

We add up what you want to keep running: refrigerator, lights, internet, a medical device, a well pump, air conditioning or the whole house. Backing up only the essentials needs a smaller generator. Backing up the whole home needs a larger one and the right transfer switch. We explain both options and the price before any work starts.

How it works

  1. Visit. We check the panel, the gas supply and where the generator can go. Placement has to meet clearance and setback rules from windows, doors and property lines, so we confirm a location that will pass inspection.
  2. Permit. We pull the permit: LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, or the city’s own Building and Safety department in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.
  3. Installation. We set the generator, wire the transfer switch and connect it to the panel.
  4. Test and inspection. We run a full transfer test with the power off and schedule the city inspection.

FAQ

What size generator do I need?

It depends on what you want to keep running. We add up the loads for the essentials or for the whole home and recommend a size before any work starts.

Does a standby generator start by itself?

Yes. With an automatic transfer switch the generator starts within seconds of an outage and switches the house back to utility power when it returns.

Do I need a permit for a home generator?

Yes. A standby generator needs a permit and a city inspection, and placement has to meet clearance and setback rules. We handle the permit and the inspection.

Will a generator help during SCE power shutoffs?

Yes. A standby generator keeps your home running during planned power shutoffs and regular outages.

How much does a generator installation cost?

It depends on the generator size, the distance to the panel and gas supply, and the panel work needed. We give you the price after the visit, before any work starts. The visit is $135 during business hours and is waived if we do the work.
