Electrical work in Malibu

Malibu is its own city: electrical permits are issued by the City of Malibu Building Safety through its Development Portal, not by LADBS. Electricity is delivered by Southern California Edison (SCE).

Two things shape most electrical work in Malibu. First, power outages: during high wind and fire weather SCE can shut off power to reduce fire risk, and canyon and coastal areas can be without power for days. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, or a battery system, keeps the essentials running. Second, the ocean: salt air is hard on outdoor electrical equipment, so we choose enclosures, fixtures and hardware that hold up near the coast.

Malibu is also rebuilding after recent wildfires. We wire new homes, pull permits with the City of Malibu and coordinate the new service with SCE.

Questions and Answers

What size generator do I need for power shutoffs?

It depends on what you want to keep running: the whole house or only the essentials such as the refrigerator, lights, internet and garage door. We calculate the load and recommend the size.

Generator or battery?

A generator runs as long as it has fuel; a battery is silent and can be recharged by solar panels. Many Malibu homes use one or both. We explain the trade-offs for your home.

Who issues electrical permits in Malibu?

The City of Malibu Building Safety. We submit the permit through the city’s Development Portal and schedule the inspection.
