Sky Power Co. is a licensed electrical contractor (CSLB #1037507) in Sherman Oaks. Since 2018 our team of five electricians has installed automatic transfer switches with standby generators for homes and businesses across Los Angeles.
What an automatic transfer switch does
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) watches the power coming from the utility. When it goes out, the switch starts the generator and moves your home to generator power. When utility power comes back, it switches back and lets the generator cool down and shut off. Nobody has to run extension cords or flip breakers in the dark.
It also keeps the generator from sending power back into the utility lines, which protects the line crews working on the outage.
Whole home or essential circuits
- Whole home. A service-rated transfer switch at the main service, sized for the whole house and a larger generator.
- Essential circuits. A separate panel for the circuits that matter most, such as the refrigerator, lights, internet and a home office, with a smaller generator.
We calculate the loads and match the transfer switch to your generator and your panel.
How it works
- Visit and load calculation. We check the panel and decide between whole-home and essential circuits with you.
- Permit. We pull the permit: LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, or the city’s own Building and Safety department in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.
- Installation. We install and wire the transfer switch, and the essential-circuits panel if needed.
- Transfer test and inspection. We test a full transfer to the generator and back, then schedule the city inspection.

FAQ
Do I need a transfer switch for a standby generator?
Yes. A standby generator connects to your home through a transfer switch. An automatic one starts the generator and switches the power without anyone doing anything.
Can I back up only some circuits?
Yes. We can put the most important circuits on a separate panel and back up only those with a smaller generator.
Is a transfer switch safe for utility workers?
Yes. The transfer switch keeps the generator from feeding power back into the utility lines.
Do you test the system?
Yes. We run a full transfer to generator power and back before the city inspection.
