Home battery backup system installation

Sky Power Co. is a licensed electrical contractor (CSLB #1037507) in Sherman Oaks. Since 2018 our team of five electricians has installed backup power for homes and businesses across Los Angeles, including battery systems, generators and the panel work around them.

What a home battery does

A home battery stores electricity and powers your home when the grid goes down. It switches over automatically and quietly, with no fuel and no engine. Batteries are a good fit for short and medium outages, for planned power shutoffs in fire weather, and for keeping essentials like the refrigerator, lights, internet and medical devices running.

If you already have solar panels, a battery can store their energy so it is there at night or during an outage. For long outages, a battery can be paired with a standby generator.

Sizing your backup

  • Essential circuits. The battery powers a separate panel with the circuits that matter most. This needs a smaller system.
  • Whole home. The battery backs up the whole house. This needs more capacity, and large loads like air conditioning have to be planned carefully.

We check your panel, look at what you want to keep running and for how long, and explain the options and the price before any work starts.

How it works

  1. Visit. We check the panel and choose a location for the battery that meets the code clearances.
  2. Permit. We pull the permit: LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, or the city’s own Building and Safety department in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Calabasas.
  3. Installation. We install the battery and its backup equipment and connect it to your panel.
  4. Test and inspection. We test the switchover with the power off and schedule the city inspection.

FAQ

How long will a home battery keep my power on?

It depends on the battery size and what you run. Essentials like the refrigerator, lights and internet use much less than air conditioning. We size the system for what you want to keep running.

Do I need solar panels to have a home battery?

No. A battery can be charged from the grid and used for backup. If you already have solar panels, it can also store their energy.

Battery or generator?

A battery is quiet and needs no fuel, which works well for shorter outages. A generator runs as long as it has fuel. Some homes use both. We explain the options for your home.

Do I need a permit for a home battery?

Yes. A battery system needs a permit and a city inspection. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.
